The Winter Shoe

Choosing the right footwear is essential to keep your feet warm and avoid slipping on snow and frozen ground. Whether you're walking, running or trail running, in winter, opt for shoes with a GORE-TEX membrane to protect your feet from the elements, including water, snow, wind and cold. They create a waterproof barrier that keeps moisture out, keeping your feet dry and at a comfortable temperature.

The first question a runner should ask themselves before choosing their winter shoe is what type of surface they will be running on the majority of their runs.

Urban conditions

If you are an urban runner, the majority of your outings will be on sidewalks, in the street or on normally used paths, therefore quite beaten. Here are some models of shoes well suited to urban conditions

Shoes with cleats

For the runner far from urban centers, the shoe with a more aggressive lug will be preferred. The streets and trails are often less used, so a shoe with better grip in the snow will be preferred. Here are some interesting options for this kind of exit

Shoes with gaiters

Several shoe models have an integrated gaiter. These models are perfect for snowy days, mountain walks or for those who are more sensitive to the cold. Here are some shoe models that meet this need well

The metal crampons

There are 3 options available to you if the need for extra grip arises.

1

Shoes with original crampons

It is possible to choose a shoe model that originally includes crampons like the models

2

Installation of "gripstuds" type crampons

Another option is to have cleats added to your new shoe or to a shoe you already own. To do this, the surface where the cleat will be screwed into must be large enough so that the cleat will hold well.

3

Crampons

The last option is to add cleats over your shoes. Here are the cleats we suggest depending on the surface you run on

Gore-tex

GORE-TEX is found in most winter running shoes. The waterproof membrane, often identified with the letters GTX, acts as a barrier against water, slush and cold. GORE-TEX breathes in its own way, but if by misfortune the inside of the shoe becomes damp or wet, the water will not come out. Some models of shoes instead have a homemade membrane. You will not find the same waterproofing as a Gore-Tex shoe, but you will still have a comfortable shoe for winter conditions.

The widths

Width options are not very common in winter shoes. Some models like the New Balance Hierro V8 GTX and the New Balance 880 V14 GTX are available in a “2E” version. If you can’t find the shoe that fits your foot width in the “GTX” versions, we suggest looking at a trail running shoe and combining it with a waterproof Dexshell sock or a merino wool sock.
